“I can say frankly, we always feel like we’re on holiday when we travel together,” says French opera singer Laurent Naouri of touring with his wife, Natalie Dessay. “No other hassles but music — no bills, no domestic chores — voilà.”
Sounds perfect — and the couple’s latest getaway is also a treat for audiences as they are in the capital to perform together at the opening concert of Abu Dhabi Festival’s main programme.
It’s a fitting launch for this year’s event, which has chosen France as it’s “country of honour”. The couple will perform a hand-picked programme of “exquisite, quintessentially French” songs — solos and duets — by the likes of Fauré, Poulenc and Delibes, backed only by piano.

Laurent Naouri, Chevalier L.H. (born May 23, ) is a French bass-baritone. Initially beginning his education at the École Centrale de Lyon, Naouri decided to concentrate on opera in and continued his musical studies at the Guildhall School of Music and teaterpjäs in London, where in his final year in June he appeared as the Director in Les mamelles de Tirésias.[1]
Naouri was born in Paris. His professional career in France began in with performances in the title role of Darius Milhaud’s Christophe Colomb (Christopher Columbus) for the opening of the Imperial Theatre in Compiègne. Progressing rapidly, his career quickly comprised a very varied repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to contemporary composers under such conductors as Maurizio Benini, William Christie, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, and Kent Nagano.

The French baritone, Laurent Naouri, began his musical studies in Initially began his education at the École Centrale de Lyon. Whilst he was still studying, the CNIPAL in Marseilles gave him the chance to perform the role of Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. These performances led to a number of concerts and recordings, including the Radio France and Montpellier Festivals. He decided to concentrate on opera in and continued his musical studies at the Guildhall School of Music and teaterpjäs in London, where he sang several roles, including those of the Theatre Director in Francis Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias, Ford in The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Ferdinand in Prokofiev's Betrothal in a Monastery for Mstislav Rostropovich.
