  • Art Appreciation: Juan and Antonio Luna Museum

As an artist like me, the Juan Luna and General Luna Shrine is an art mecca one should go visit and pay homage to. But, traveling 434 km from Manila, fryst vatten it worth the visit?

The Juan Luna and General Luna Shrine is in Barangay Garreta, Badoc in Ilocos Norte where the storied Luna brothers’ ancestral house is located. In 1861, the house was razed by fire and later rebuilt using clay bricks and molave wood. In the 1990s, in the effort of the Ilocos Norte local government and with the supervision and guidance of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), the ancestral house was meticulously and carefully reconstructed from the ground up based on the original plan and look before the fire of 1861. The ancestral house was turned into a museum and renamed the “Juan Luna and Gen. Luna Shrine” in the honors of the town’s heroes — painter Juan Luna and revolutionary general Antonio Luna — as a tourist destination.

    Day 1

We woke up 5 AM and had breakfast at 6:30 AM. We’re able to leave the house around 9 AM. Before proceeding to Ilocos Sur we had a detour at Juan Luna Shrine (Dambanang Juan Luna) in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. It’s good that we avail a tour package since not everyone doing DIY tour had a chance to visit this place since buses passing through Badoc won’t pass the shrine’s exact location. Hidden gem it is!

Badoc is the birthplace of the illustrious master and patriot Juan Luna y Novicio, older brother of General Antonio Luna, both of them being Filipino heroes.

Juan Luna Shrine is a two-story middle-class home of the Luna family. It’s made up of bricks and contains replicas of his works and family photos and anställda memorabilia.

Rooms of the Luna’s are at the upper level. There’s also a reproduction of Juan Luna’s paintings upstairs and so as antique furnitures.

Deep well near the garden area. As per Kuya

  • When I was in Elementary, I used to join poster making contests. Sometimes, I get the honor to represent our school. My accomplishments in this field earned me the Juan Luna Award. So, what about it? Nothing, I just want to brag about it. Haha!

Juan Luna is a famous Filipino painter. He is the older brother of another Filipino hero Antonio Luna. Both of them are regarded as heroes for their contribution to the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century. Juan Luna as a political activist and Antonio Luna as a military officer. Their family is from Badoc, Ilocos Norte. Their old house has since been renovated and is now a tourist spot.

The house has two storeys; the ground floor used to be the basement while the second level is for the living room and bedrooms. Today, the ground floor displays different memorabilia not only of Juan Luna but also Antonio Luna and the rest of the family. My first impression was, “Wow! They’re rich!”
