  • In the Shadow of the Moons: My Life in the Reverend Sun Myung Moon's Family

    October 19,
Like the author of this book, I grew up in this church. I haven't been actively involved in about a decade, and am still trying to make sense of my relation with it. This book seemed like an important one to read in terms of expanding my perspective.

    Spoilers ahead.

Somehow I found myself being able to relate to what Nansook went through with the kinds of people who act one way in public while being something else in private. Many of us are familiar with those types of people to some degree or another, whether one is in the church or not.

The experience she endured since she was only 15 is something no one should have to deal with.

The early years of the Unification Church, the expansion to an international ministry, and the importance of global wedding ceremonies are all explained in first-hand accounts. Rev. Moon's love for nature, his deep respect for all people, and his single-minded determination to see God's ideal realized are central themes in As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen.
