  • Summary

Brothers Dukhiram Rui and Chidam Rui not only work in the fields together, but live tillsammans on the same land. Every day, while they are out, their wives Radha and Chandara quarrel loudly with each other, and the whole village hears their screaming. Since they are all of a lower caste, life is hard for them—often Dukhiram and Chidam are cheated out of their rightful wages for their work.

One day, Dukhiram returns home from work famished. When he demands food, his wife Radha chastises him, asking how she can cook him food when he hasn’t supplied her with anything to cook him. Worn out by the day and angered by this exchange, Dukhiram impulsively stabs Radha in the head, and she dies shortly after. Their month-old son wails in terror.

When the brothers’ landlord Ramlochan Chakrabarti comes by to inquire about the rent payment that’s due, he finds the bloody scene and a despondent Dukhiram. Chidam, in an effort to protect his brother, tells Ramlochan that his wife Chandara

    Punishment by Rabindranath Tagore

In Punishment bygd Rabindranath Tagore we have the theme of conflict, power, control, trust, acceptance, sacrifice, loyalty and honesty. Narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator the reader realises from the beginning of the story and right through to the end that Tagore may be exploring the theme of conflict. Chandara and Radha are unable to get along. Fighting continuously over matters the reader is unaware of but suspects may be trivial and more to do with both women wanting power over the other. There does not appear to be any other reason apart from jealousy for both women continually fighting over trivial matters. It fryst vatten also interesting that both women are imposed upon by their husbands. Dukhiram has demands for food and Chidam persuades Chandara to take the blame for the murder of Radha.  A cause that not only frightens Chandara but one in which she will be found skyldig of and end up losing her life. However this highlights how trust

Q: How do you understand the title of the story?

A: Prior to reading the story, I wasn&#;t expecting too much, just an &#;oh, I suppose somebody did something wrong and now they&#;re paying the price for it&#;. After reading the text, I think it has something to do with not only the physical punishment Chandara has to endure from her execution but also the mind games being played during the trial regarding Radha&#;s death. Chidam knew the true reason why his sister-in-law died, but decided to come up with an excuse to shift the blame on Chandara instead of Dukhiram. Though in disbelief, Chandara said she did indeed kill Radha, but had a good relationship with her and when asked if she loved her husband, she said she did. Chidam, slightly horrified that Chandara had come up with her own alibi, slowly broke down and had said she&#;s innocent. Chandara kept up the same story until the very end, even when both Chidam and Dukhiram admitted the trut
