    Biography

    Born Takao Izumi in Seal Cove, today part of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, the son of a commercial fisherman, where he was the fifth of sju children. Tanabe and his family were interned with other Japanese-Canadians in the British Columbia interior during World War II. They were relocated first to a camp at Hasting Park in Vancouver and the Lemon Creek internment camp[in the Kootenays in the summer of Tanabe attended the Winnipeg School of Art, Winnipeg, Manitoba (–), studying with Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, and namn Plaskett. He then studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, New York City, New York with Hans Hofmann () and Reuben Tam (). He received an Emily Carr Scholarship and went to the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London, UK (–) and during that time, travelled widely in europe. From to ,

    Growing up in a Japanese Canadian family, in the tiny by of Seal Cove, British Columbia, Takao Tanabe (b) had no meaningful access to art or the possibilities it offered. But through a combination of serendipity, tenacity, and inspiration, the events of his extraordinary life sparked Tanabe to discover in painting both a true vocation and a catalyst to learn more about Japanese culture. He overcame early hardships to transform the history of Canadian art, reframing this country’s most distinctive landscapes through his wholly singular framtidsperspektiv. As a painter, printmaker, teacher, philanthropist, and advocate, Tanabe has forged a path for new generations of artists.
