An Italian physician, astronomer, mapmaker, and mathematician who is best known for creating a map of the world that may have been used by Christopher Columbus in planning his voyage to the East Indies. Born in Florence, he was the son of a doctor, Dominic Toscanelli. He studied mathematics with Giovanni dell'Abacco in Florence and attended the University of Padua, earning the title of doctor of medicine in He returned to Florence and earned a reputation as a leading mathematician and astronomer, considered by many people to be the most brilliant scientist of his day.

Mathematician, astronomer, and cosmographer, b. at Florence in ; d. there, 10 May, Toscanelli, who was one of the most distinguished scientists of the fifteenth century, was the son of the Florentine physician Dominic Toscanelli. He began his mathematical studies at Florence under Giovanni dell'Abacco. At the age of eighteen he entered the University of Padua where he studied mathematics, philosophy, and medicine. In this period he formed his life-long friendship with Nicholas of Cusa who studied law and mathematics at the same university. The two probably met at the college Prosdocimos de'Beldomandi.
