    Puerto Galera, officially the Municipality of Puerto Galera (Filipino: Bayan ng Puerto Galera), is a municipality in the province of Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 41,961 people.[3]

    It is mainly accessible from the Southern Luzon gateway port of Batangas by bamboo boats (bangka) operated by local regular operators. Seaplane Operator Air Juan Aviation, Inc. flies two daily flights from Manila to Puerto Galera on their Cessna Grand Caravan Seaplanes.

    In 1837, the seat of government was transferred to Calapan due to the suitable agricultural plains and the Spaniards opted to stay there. When Puerto Galera was no longer the seat of the government, the Spanish government officials left the town and only the friars remained. A “cabesa” or “capitan del pueblo” was then appointed by the “governador” to collect the tributes or taxes from the people and to maintain peace and order. Among the heads of the town called “gobernadorcillos” who bec ame famous were Jose Salamat, Juan Quinto, Aguido Cobarrubias and Hilarion Axalan.

    Guarding the coasts of Puerto Galera was a Spanish warship, named “Cañonero Mariveles”. However,on November 18, 1879, the ill-fated battleship was hit by a powerful storm, which caused it to sink out – side the West Coast of Muelle Bay.     History of Puerto Galera

    It is said that Puerto Galera was discovered by the Spaniards in the early 16th century. They found it to be a haven for their trade ships during heavy squalls and typhoons, hence the name "Puerto De Galera," which means "Port of Galleons" in Spanish.

    Founded in 1574 as the capital of Mindoro, Puerto Galera is one of the oldest settlements of religious missionaries in the island. Originally located at Lagundian, now a place called Minolo, the town had to be relocated to its present site due to frequent Moro raids. It was then named Puerto Galera. Spanish galleons traveling from Mexico and Spain sought refuge in Puerto Galera during stormy weather before proceeding to Manila. In 1837, the seat of government was transferred to Calapan.
