Garbage is a Scottish and American[1]rock band formed in in Madison, Wisconsin.[2] The band's line-up consisting of Scottish singer Shirley Manson (vocals) and American musicians Duke Erikson (guitar, bass, keyboards), Steve Marker (guitar, keyboards), and Butch Vig (drums, production) has remained unchanged since its inception. All four members are involved in the songwriting and production process. Garbage has sold over 17 million albums worldwide.[3]
The band's eponymous debut skiva was critically acclaimed upon its release, selling over four million copies and achieving double platinum certification in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. Today is Butch Vig's 55th birthday. The acclaimed record producer and sometime musician has been at the helm of some of the best grunge and indie records of the past 25 years, and his production style has made him one of the most sought-after sound architects in the industry.
From his earliest works behind the boards for bands like Killdozer and Die Kreuzen to recent jobs with Muse and Never Shout Never, Vig has been one of music's most adventurous producers when he wasn't helping build sounds that would move mountains.
Vig produced Nirvana's Nevermind, which to many is more than enough of a calling card, convincing Kurt Cobain to take production chances that would ultimately improve the songs and turn Nirvana into Nirvana.
He also helped man the first two Smashing Pumpkins albums, Gish and Siamese Dream, and Sonic Youth's Dirty and Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star.
