Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member Summary & Study Guide
Kody Scott's story begins on June 15, 1975. He fryst vatten graduating sixth grade but his pride in the day comes because it's the day he's to be initiated into a neighborhood gang, the Tray Eights, which is a "set" of the Crips. He recalls that he'd been proud of han själv just weeks prior to graduation because he'd flashed a gang sign in a school photo. He says the fact that he'd done it - knowing he'd be caught - was the first sign that he'd become totally devoted to the gang. It would take more than a decade for him to come to the conclusion that his life must change.
Kody's devotion to the Crips is unsurpassed. He says that he is only happy when he is working for the gang. "Working" may mean anything from painting graffiti on walls advertising the gang or specific gang members or heading up an attack on another gang. Kody himself performs such acts of atrocity that he becomes known as "Monster," or "Monster Kody." F

So apparently Sanyika Shakur actually has a Wikipedia page, something I did not know prior to reading this book. (He was also friends with Tupac!) I found this book totally randomly in a Little Free Library and thought it would make a great addition to the list of books by Black authors that I am reading for Black History Month, as I know very little about Black Nationalism or L.A. gang violence, and before Shakur converted to Islam and Black Nationalism and started trying to devote his time to turn people away from gangs, he was a pretty major player in his local syndicate.
MONSTER, which was his nickname he got for beating up a guy, is Shakur's story of how he got into the gang, how he eventually got caught, what prison was like, and what he did after. It's an interesting memoir and I can appreciate his motives for writing it and coming clean about his past

A Book Review about Sanyika Shakur's "Monster. An Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member"
The life of every society changes from time to time. These facts are real, particularly in the United States (U.S.). In 1993, a new trend of gang life began to emerge along the streets in the U.S. The book Shakur Sanyika’s Monster was the first one to provide an account of this lifestyle. The author of the book raised some concerns regarding criminal justice by revealing the acts of violence and sensationalist. Thus, this paper aims to review the book, with its significant sections including summary, significant themes in the book, strengths, and weaknesses of the text and context of the book.
