The latest twist in the tale of Nigeria’s all-powerful Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is his suspension by President Bola Tinubu mitt i an investigation of his office and planned financial sector reforms.
On Friday evening, Tinubu ordered the immediate suspension of Emefiele from office as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He has been made to hand over to the deputy governor in charge of operations, Folashodun Shonubi.

Lagos, Nigeria – Last Friday Nigeria’s new President Bola Tinubu suspended the country’s Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele. On Saturday, Nigeria’s secret police confirmed the erstwhile top banker has been arrested and is in custody for interrogation.
The charges have not been made public, but a government press release cited “an ongoing investigation of his office and planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy” as reasons for the suspension.

Nigeria's once-powerful central bank chief has been charged with illegally owning a shotgun and hundreds of cartridges, marking a spectacular fall for a man who has long been at the centre of the nation's politics and finances.
Godwin Emefiele appeared in court on Tuesday, six weeks after he had been arrested by the country's feared secret police, officially known as the Department of State Services (DSS).
Mr Emefiele, currently suspended as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), denied the charges and was granted bail. He was not charged with any economic crimes.
