  • 2017 has been a watershed year for public revelations of abuses within Hollywood, with the flood of horrifying allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein leading to even more women and men in the industry speaking up about sexual harassment, assault, and rape. Disgraced former superstar Mel Gibson has not been mentioned in recent investigations, but while he no longer occupies the same rarified air he did from roughly 1985 until roughly 2005, he has also clearly benefited from the environment that gives allegedly abusive men chance after chance.

  • Whatever happened to... Mel Gibson?

Mel Gibson had one of the most public fall from graces in recent years. It's become the stuff of legend.

As the Australian actor turns 60 today, it's almost difficult to quantify just how high he reached and how far he's fallen. Born in New York, Gibson's family emigrated to Sydney when he was 12. At a young age, Gibson was destined for big things. At just 23, Gibson was a well-known name in Australia thanks to a role in popular soap The Sullivans. The film became an overnight sensation and catapulted Gibson into the limelight both in Australia and in the US. He would work with Peter Weir twice in the space of a year, in 1981's Gallipoli and 1982's The Year of Living Dangerously, before reprising the role of Max Rockatansky in the two sequels that followed. Born in Peekskill, New York, Gibson moved with his parents to Sydney, Australia, when he was 12 years old. He studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, where he starred opposite Judy Davis in a production of Romeo and Juliet. During the 1980s, he founded Icon Entertainment, a production company. Director Peter Weir cast him as one of the leads in the World War I drama Gallipoli (1981), which earned Gibson a Be
