Chapter 5 American Absurdism as Philosophy: Edward Albee in Germany
Abstract
In the German-speaking world, where Edward Albee’s career as a playwright truly took off, he has often been perceived as an exponent of (American) philosophy in dramatic form. This contrasts with the reception of his plays in the US, and especially the reception of his later plays, which took divergent paths in the two languages, reflecting different views of the function of the stage, of philosophy, and of the social dynamics of each culture. Albee’s German reception as a philosophical playwright also shows the particular nature of reception discourse: Albee’s work was deployed to defend opposite philosophical positions within the broader agendas of rival philosophical camps. Categorizing his work as philosophical also anticipated the fuller realization of the theological potential of his dramatic oeuvre that was uncovered in later scholarship. This class introduces the basics of aeronautics and astronautics through applied physics, hands-on activities, and real world examples. The principles of fluid flow, flight, and propulsion for aircraft will be illustrated, including the creation of lift and drag, aerodynamic performance including takeoff, climb, range, and landing. The principles of orbits, maneuvers, space environment, and propulsion for spacecraft will be illustrated. Students will be exposed to the history and challenges of aeronautics and astronautics.
